Sed Rate Tests - Measuring Inflammation through Red Blood Cells

ESR Stat Plus

HemaTechnologies’ ESR Stat Plus and next-generation ESR Stat 6 are designed to provide hospital labs and clinics with accurate, low cost erythrocyte sedimentation rate (sed rate) testing capabilities. The ESR Stat Plus and the ESR Stat 6 instruments analyze blood samples and are essential in the diagnosis of health issues that result in short term and long term inflammation.

The test reflects differences in blood composition when inflammation is present. When blood is placed in a tube that is thin and tall, the erythrocytes settle gradually on the bottom. When inflammation is present, the red blood cells clump together and create units which are denser than individual cells. These heavier clumps of cells settle more quickly in the tube than the individual cells found when no inflammation is present.
Traditionally accomplished over the course of an hour, the sed rate test measures the distance red blood cells fall over a set period of time. Red blood cells that have descended further than normal indicate an immune system inflammatory response.
A simple blood test that does not necessitate fasting, the sed rate test is expedited through use of the ESR Stat Plus or ESR Stat 6 analyzers, which require a small blood sample and can generate three or six sed rates results respectively, in only five minutes.
